Joel Karabo Elliott

Joel Karabo Elliott is an American/South African multi-instrumentalist, steward of the global Roots Grown Deep ensemble, and composer of what he calls “musical ecology”. He is this week’s featured performer at the Greencastle Summer Music Festival, a series of free indoor concerts that take place on Wednesdays at 7.30pm in the air-conditioned sanctuary of Gobin Church.

“Last week’s multi-genre opening concert drew a large audience and a standing ovation,” said Eric Edberg, artistic director and founding executive of the festival. “I love Joel’s incredibly versatile and creative music making, and I’m thrilled for our community to experience his unique musical gifts.”

For this performance, Joel will share an intimate solo concert full of poetry, stories and music that he guides with guitar, piano, trombone and his versatile and improvised voice. Prepare to travel without moving between mountains, rivers and villages in Southern Africa, the Caribbean and North America, as he weaves stories of his journey in connection with community and nature on two continents. Joel is a 2006 DePauw graduate of the School of Music, History Department and Honor Scholar Program. The festival, which has featured “friends making music for friends” concerts since 2005, is funded by individual donors, a grant from the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau, an endowment from the Community Foundation of Putnam County and the Inn in DePauw, host to the festival’s outside performers.

Next week’s performers are Percussion Group DePauw, including Greencastle residents Ming-Hui Kuo and Ben Hogan, followed by cello and piano Duo Cantabile on June 22. The full schedule can be viewed online at greencastlemusic.org.
