Local music artists and producers optimistic about future of new Downtown South Raleigh concert venue

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — Plans for Raleigh’s south downtown have generated excitement.

“It’s something that can be used by the community for artists who are already there,” said Omar McCallop.

For many, it also triggered what could possibly happen.

“I said ‘yo, I’m going to have my event here in 2024. 919 days. That’s what I thought to myself,'” Rome Jeterr said.

This week, concert promoters AEG and Raleigh’s Kane Realty announced that they are teaming up to bring a new concert venue to South Raleigh. That would close what the Kane Realty CEO calls “a critical gap.”

It will be a concert space with a capacity of 3,500 seats located in the southern city center.

The venue will host indoor and outdoor shows with a rooftop lounge.

McCallop produced the Carolina Music Awards in Raleigh for 15 years.

“I hope they take the time and energy to get to know some of the people who have worked in the music industry here in Raleigh and in North Carolina over the years,” he said.

He, along with Raleigh Rome-based rapper and actor Jeterr, hopes the companies behind this project will tap into the music scene here.

“I will hit them personally. I really hope they get out in the community because we need them,” Jeterr said. “Because if you don’t, what’s going to happen is that the local people and the natives won’t support what’s going on,” Jeterr said.

AEG’s chief operating officer and general counsel said in a statement that music venues like this “bring a sense of community and help define the energy of a neighborhood.”

“I think the key is to stay positive. We will stay positive. We’re going to stay optimistic,” McCallop said.

CBS17 asked the City of Raleigh and Downtown Raleigh Alliance if that could mean more music festivals and other music-related events.

Downtown Raleigh Alliance said in an email that they don’t have updates for our questions.

As for the new site, construction is expected to begin in the spring and open in the fall of 2024.
