St. Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids is proud to bring Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra at Royce Auditorium on Thursday, April 14 for a spirited evening of big band favorites. With his prolific musical career established, acclaimed trombonist, composer and producer Delfeayo Marsalis has been praised for his “technical excellence, inventiveness and frequent touches of humour”. He has also been hailed as one of the “best, most imaginative and most musical trombonists of his generation”. Marsalis’ commitment to optimism and progressive musical thought coexists in modern New Orleans jazz as a conceptual cornerstone of the Uptown Jazz Orchestra and their latest album, Jazz night. Performances by the Uptown Jazz Orchestra are always a big party, opening and closing their concerts with second-line numbers and engaging the audience in participating in the music. Marsalis, a NEA jazz master and Wynton and Brandford’s brother comes from a long line of family musicians. He shared the bandstand with jazz legends Art Blakey, Max Roach and Elvin Jones, as well as pop icons Fats Domino, Ray Charles and George Clinton. Organic Delfeayo Marsalis
As an acclaimed trombonist, composer and producer, Delfeayo Marsalis has also devoted his prolific career to musical theater and education. With the Marsalis family of musicians, including his father Ellis, the artist was destined for a life in music. Marsalis has toured internationally with jazz legends such as Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones and Slide Hampton, while leading his own bands. At the age of 17, Marsalis began his career as a producer and has produced over 120 recordings to date, winning Grammy Awards and multiple nominations.
In 2008, Delfeayo Marsalis formed the Downtown Jazz Orchestra, a highly entertaining ensemble that focuses on maintaining important jazz traditions such as riff-playing, New Orleans polyphony and spontaneous arrangements. Delfeayo also formed the Downtown Musical Theater in 2000. A non-profit organization that empowers youth through musical theater training. He has written sixteen story-based and/or community-building musicals to date. Additionally, he has composed over 90 songs that help introduce children to jazz through musical theater and has reached more than 5,000 students nationwide with his Swinging with the Cool School soft introduction workshops at jazz workshops.
Marsalis holds a dual bachelor’s degree in music performance and production from Berklee College of Music and a master’s degree in jazz performance from the University of Louisville. A doctorate was also awarded by New England College.
