Davido and South African record producer DJ Maphorisa are at loggerheads over who gave Amapiano his first spotlight.
Amapiano is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012.
It’s a hybrid of deep house, jazz, lounge music and wide percussive bass lines.
The genre is distinguished by high-pitched piano melodies, Kwaito basslines, low-tempo 90s South African house beats, and drumming from another local subgenre of house music known as Bacardi.
The genre became popular during the transition to the 2020s, even nowadays among Millennials and Gen Z.
Wednesday, Wizkid published ‘Bad To Me’, an Amapiano themed song.
Afropop has enjoyed considerable success globally, with Nigeria being an integral part of the music industry in Africa.
Wizkid’s song has sparked arguments over the Nigerian artist who gave Amapiano his first push into the spotlight.
Arguing for Davido, one fan wrote: “Davido brought Amapiano from South Africa two years ago and made it a hit genre in Africa and beyond.
“Wizkid is now jumping on the same genre after Davido made it a hit genre. This is how many African artists have benefited from Davido’s success for over 12 years.

In Wizkid’s defense, DJ Maphorisa said, “Kabza & Maphorisa were the first to put Wizkid n Burnaboy on an Amapiano song ‘Sponono’. It was a historic moment 3 years ago.
“The research before the tweet. Also, it was the first time Wiz n Burna had hopped to the same song together. Let it penetrate.

Davido unexpectedly floundered, accusing Maphorisa of not liking him.
“You never liked me, huh?” I’ve always been good to you. In any event! Away now! Chu chu chu chu chu,” the pop singer wrote.

Adewale Adeleke also joined the fray to defend Davido.
“My brother has put countless artists and producers down only to have ‘some’ of them disrespect him! There’s a reason he’s still here and y’all are down,” he said. -he explains.
