We’re used to people using shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent to launch themselves into the spotlight – but what you might not realize is that plenty of household names got their start on television in a very different way.

Long before shows like Cutting It, Wild At Heart and Britain’s Got Talent arrived, Mandy got her start on TV when Cilla Black tried to find her a match on Blind Date.
When appearing on the show in 1991, Amanda introduced herself as a drama student who loved singing blues as well as classics like Knees Up Mother Brown (??), and confessed that her ultimate celebrity crush was Jack Nicholson.
Sadly, however, that was not to be the case, with the future BGT star heading home without a date… which her potential suitor looked more than a little disgusted with when he first looked at her.

He may be best known now for his business decisions, but his stint at Sale Of The Century ended with him leaving with 20 pounds worth of cookware. We wonder when was the last time he picked them up…

Olly Murs’ optimism came back to bite him somewhat when he was a contender for Deal Or No Deal, during which he turned down an offer of £26,000 and ended up pocketing just a ten.
The future high-end appeared on Channel 4’s game show two years before he rose to fame on The X Factor, and after becoming a household name he was invited to appear on a celebrity special.
Unfortunately, he did even worse the second time around, ending up with just 50p. To compensate his chosen charity, Olly has pledged to donate £5,000 of his own money.

Someone who fared much better on Deal Or No Deal was record producer Shahid Khan, who we all know better as Naughty Boy.
He appeared on the show the same year as Olly, but was slightly more successful, grossing £44,000, which he spent on launching his career as a music producer.
It was also money well spent, with Naughty Boy continuing to work with stars like Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé.

Another comedy star with a previous appearance on a game show is Taskmaster favorite Alex Horne.
Alex did a great job on Countdown, winning three straight shows in 2008 during Des O’Connor and Carol Vorderman’s tenure, before finally being beaten.
Becoming a popular comedian, Alex returned to Countdown several times, appearing as a guest on Dictionary Corner as well as a panelist on the show’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats specials.

Mark “The Beast” Labbett is one of the UK’s most famous quiz experts, so it’s probably no surprise that before he rose to fame on The Chase he tried out a few game shows, including Mastermind and Fifteen To One.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? was perhaps his most successful attempt. Failing to land in the hot seat when he played at Fastest Finger First in 2005, Mark – then working as a substitute – returned a year later, walking away with an impressive £32,000.
Much later, it made an appearance on the rebooted version of the show in 2020, serving as Charlotte Church’s “friend’s phone” during a celebrity special.
Anne Hegerty – Brain

Like her co-star on The Chase, Anne “The Governess” Hegerty competed on Mastermind in 1988.
His specialty topic was “The Life and Works of Lorenz Hart”, the lyricist behind such standards as Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered, The Lady Is A Tramp and My Funny Valentine. Sadly, there’s no clip of Anne in action, but still enjoy this shot of her in the 80s at the Mastermind studio.

Then, in his early twenties, comedian and actor Stephen Fry appeared as a Mastermind candidate in 1980, representing Queen’s College Cambridge.
He would later achieve huge success as a quiz show host, when he began hosting the hit show QI.
Miriam Margolyes – College Challenge
Another iconic Cambridge alum to take part in the University Challenge was the always outrageous Miriam Margolyes.
We say ‘still outrageous’ because Miriam has long claimed this appearance on University Challenge was the first instance of someone uttering the f-word on the BBC after struggling to contain their disappointment at a sloppy response.
The moment itself was censored, although Miriam insisted what she was saying was very obvious – although unfortunately a clip of the explicit explosion does not appear to exist.

He came out in the first round during a 1983 Christmas special – but at least he got to keep the iconic Blankety Blank checkbook and a pen, huh?
