MLB’s Houston Astros install Amazon’s Just Walk Out retail technology inside Minute Maid Park
MLB’s Houston Astros have added Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology to two food and beverage outlets in Minute Maid Park. Fans can insert their credit card at the front door of each store before grabbing items from the shelves and have their card automatically charged for those items as they exit.
The checkout-less experience is achieved through Amazon’s computer vision cameras and sensors that identify items entered by individual shoppers inside the store. Products taken from the shelves will be added to a customer’s virtual cart. If someone puts an item back on the shelf, it will automatically be removed from their cart. Fans purchasing alcohol will be required to present identification to a store employee. Amazon is also leveraging its Just Walk Out retail technology at sports venues such as Climate Pledge Arena, UBS Arena, TD garden and the United Center.
“Our technology is designed to provide a fast and frictionless shopping experience, so we’re excited to help eliminate queues for fans when they need to refuel during matches and between innings. “, Dilip Kumar, vice president of physical retail and technology at Amazon, said in a statement.
Seattle Kraken’s Just Walk Out stores at Climate Pledge Arena also offer Amazon’s Palm Recognition for payments, although the MLB press release makes no mention of this technology being offered at Minute Maid Park. Amazon signed a deal last year with AEG-owned ticketing service AXS to implement its Amazon One palm recognition in places of entertainment.
The Red Rocks concert venue in Colorado planned to use palm-scanning technology on guests for ticket entry, but halted after musical artists protested its planned use during a concert in March. This demonstration was led by Evan Greer, director of the advocacy group fight for the future.
“It’s great because Red Rocks was one of the first major music venues in the country to start experimenting with this type of biometric surveillance technology. Their abandonment of Amazon will send a strong message to other venues,” Greer said wrote on Twitter in March.
