Tierra Whack most often travels the hip-hop lane, but the experimental rapper and singer has proven herself capable of much outside of her main genre. This was most clearly demonstrated by the series of genre-specific EPs she released last December: Rap?, Popular?and R&B?. While “Dolly” appeared on Popular?he would have felt more comfortable on an EP called Country? Where Bluegrass? Where Popular?because it is rather there that the melody leans stylistically.
Now, a top artist in this space has shown his love for the melody, as Kevin Morby has offered a live cover of “Dolly” for SiriusXMU. It’s not much of a stretch to see the song performed by Morby, who didn’t have to do much to fit it into his style, resulting in a nice, natural take on the track.
Whack already said Billboard of the song, “If I hear something cool, I’m like, ‘I wanna try that.’ I watched the Dolly Parton documentary on Netflix and started listening to bluegrass and I was like, “Yo, that’s so cool,” and then I made a song called “Dolly.”
Meanwhile, Whack has something else to celebrate, as she recently landed her first film role via a guest appearance in Adam Sandler’s new basketball movie. Hustle.
